Amsterdam, November 4, 2025. At the Pakhuis headquarters in the Dutch capital, a group of friends gathered to discuss their experiences in Cuba and enjoy the film “London Recruits,” by British director Gordon Main. The evening was organized by the Solidarity Network with Cuba in the Netherlands.
The documentary, based on the book of the same name, shows the efforts and courage of several individuals recruited in London to support the African National Congress in the fight against Apartheid in South Africa during the 1960s.
Following the film, a rich debate ensued about Cuba's contribution to the independence of several African countries and the fight against Apartheid. The solidarity of the Caribbean island over the years was highlighted, as well as reciprocal examples of this solidarity from different parts of the world.
The main speaker of the evening was Arnold van Wezzel, president of the Cuba Vive Foundation, who participated in the José Martí Solidarity Brigades in Cuba for over 25 years. This brigadista and passionate advocate for just causes shared his experiences with the young people present, expressing his satisfaction at having supported Cuba for so many years and learning from its people and government.
