Nairobi, November 13, 2023- The third session of the Intergovernmental Committee (INC-3), responsible for developing an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including the marine environment, begins today at the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi, Kenya.
The opening session was addressed by the President of the Republic of Kenya, William Samoei Ruto, and Ms. Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP. Both emphasized the need to have this instrument in place by 2024, taking into account the rapid increase in levels of plastic pollution that causes a serious environmental problem on a global scale and has a negative impact on the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
