Providenciales, The Turks and Caicos Islands, 29 October 2021. Yesterday afternoon all members of the Cuban Medical Brigade in the Turks and Caicos Islands paid tribute to the Lord of the Vanguard, Commander Camilo Cienfuegos Gorriarán, 62 years after that unfortunate day in which he physically disappeared. Cuban health professionals once again demonstrated their commitment to the homeland, its history and its heroes, by remembering the sacrifices made and struggles fought by the also called the Hero of Yaguajay. " Despite the distance, we do not allow ourselves to miss a day like today and, from our trench, we remember our Lord of the Vanguard, the Commander of the People: Camilo Cienfuegos," said the Chief of the Brigade, Dr. Alfredo Morán Fernández.
After leaving the new command team for the province of Camagüey installed, at 6:01 in the afternoon of October 28, 1959, Camilo left the Ignacio Agramonte airport for return to Havana aboard a red and white Cessna 310 C, identified as FAR-53. Unfortunately for our history, the aircraft never reached its destination. Immediate actions were taken to find him, a total of 70 aircrafts were sent to search for him. For 15 days, a thorough search was carried out around the keys and coastal areas, but no traces of Camilo were found. The mourning for his death lasted seven days and from that date on, throwing flowers to the sea every October 28 has been the traditional symbol of remembrance of the hero.
