Harare, August 13, 2026 – The National Commissar of the Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU PF), Munyaradzi Machacha, today conveyed a message to Cuba from President Emmerson Mnangagwa on the occasion of the Centenary of the Historical Leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz.
While attending the commemoration at the Cuban Residence in Harare, Machacha asked Ambassador Susellys Pérez Mesa to convey Mnangagwa’s warmest and most fraternal greetings to his counterpart, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and to all the people of the Caribbean nation.
On behalf of the President and First Secretary of ZANU PF, it is an honor to attend this ceremony, inspired by the legacy of a man who belongs not only to Cuba, but to the world, the Zimbabwean leader stated.
Fidel Castro Ruz has not left us; he has simply become the air we breathe and the land we defend. He lives on in our schools, hospitals, and revolutionary spirit, he emphasized.
In the opinion of the National Commissar, we are witnessing a milestone of immense global significance, the commemoration of a great leader of the struggle for liberation, a champion of international solidarity, steadfast alongside the oppressed.
His birth a century ago, he said, marked the beginning of a new era for the Global South and for Zimbabwe. In its darkest hours of the struggle for independence, we received the support to dismantle the colonial machinery.
Machacha recalled the 40th anniversary of the Commander-in-Chief's historic visit to Harare in 1986 to attend the 8th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement.
As ZANU-PF, we reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with the Communist Party of Cuba and the Cuban people, with the unequivocal demand for the complete and unconditional lifting of the illegal economic sanctions imposed by the United States.
Machacha attended the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the Centenary of the Historical Leader of the Revolution, along with the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Albert Mavunga, and the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Friendship Group with Cuba, Wester Shamu.
The high-ranking dignitaries, together with ambassadors and diplomats from more than twenty countries, toured the exhibition showcasing the Cuban Leader's ties to Africa.
Representatives from the Fidel Castro Chair at Midlands University, the Zimbabwe-Cuba Friendship Association, the ZANU-PF youth organization, graduates of Cuban universities, and members of the medical and educational brigades also participated in the commemoration.
