Georgetown, May 11, 2018. Cuban Ambassador Narciso Reinaldo Amador paid a courtesy call to the Minister of Education of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Hon. Dr. Nicolette Henry. The Cuban diplomat thanked the Minister for the support provided by the Government of Guyana to the agreement signed between CARICOM and Cuba for the creation, in Georgetown, of the Regional Centre for the Stimulation of the Development of Children, Adolescents and Young People with Special Educational Needs Associated with Disabilities, which began its work in Guyana in 2017 and will extend its services to the rest of the CARICOM member countries in the near future.
The Minister emphasized in the usefulness of the Centre in the training of qualified personnel in special education for Guyana and the entire Caribbean region. She also expressed the commitment of the Guyanese government to continue supporting this important project.
During the meeting, both officials highlighted the historical relations of friendship and cooperation between Guyana and Cuba in the field of education and confirmed their willingness to continue working for its strengthening and expansion. To date, a total of 988 citizens of Guyana have graduated from Cuba in different careers, and 78 young people from that sister nation are currently studying in the Caribbean archipelago.
