Minister of External Affairs Sarah Flood-Beaubrun assures that they will maintain solidarity with Cuba

The Honorable Sarah Flood-Beaubrun, Minister responsible for External Affairs, expressed her solidarity with Cuba in the face of pressure from the United States for medical cooperation with the island. In an appearance on the television channel Choice TV, the Head of External Affairs was questioned about the Bill that would sanction countries that maintain medical cooperation with Cuba. In this regard, the Minister said that Cuba is a friendly country, with which they have a very close relationship and which they greatly appreciate.  She added that throughout many years Cuba has helped Saint Lucia in different ways, and referred to the fundamental role that cooperation in the field of medicine has played, in particular the assistance of a Cuban medical brigade of over 100 specialists to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. She said that the collaboration in general has allowed the presence of many Cuban health professionals and at the same time the training in Cuba as doctors of many young Saint Lucians. Because of all of the above, she reiterated her gratitude for the longstanding cooperation and friendship with Cuba. On Washington’s attempt to sanction bilateral medical cooperation, she noted that it was a subject on which there would be a common pronouncement by CARICOM and assured that the Government of Saint Lucia would maintain its solidarity with the Cuban Government despite threats from the United States.  She recalled that Saint Lucia has had a consistent and repetitive position of rejecting the Blockade, reflected in the support of the resolution against this policy at the United Nations General Assembly. She reiterated that no Cuban health worker had been trafficked and commented that if medical cooperation was affected, it would not be the Cubans who would suffer, but the countries and peoples that need this support and have received the help of Cuba in order to strengthen their health systems.
