The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Barbados met with the Cuban Ambassador to review aspects of their countries bilateral cooperation.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Barbados, the Honorable Senator Dr. Jerome Walcott received the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Sergio Jorge Pastrana, at the Headquarters of the Foreign Ministry.

During the meeting, both diplomats exchanged on the excellent collaborative relations between our two small island developing countries of the Caribbean, in the very diverse spheres of activity that range from collaboration on sports issues, to successful cooperation in confronting the COVID-19 pandemic, with the participation of a detachment of the Cuban medical contingent to face disaster situations due to extreme events and epidemics ¨Henry Reeve¨ that has been serving in Barbados since April 2020, mainly composed of nursing university graduates.

Both also commented on the proposal of the contingent of Cuban doctors as candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize, which has been promoted by important figures from around the world, including several from Barbados.

They also reviewed the opportunities for expanding and deepening collaboration both on this and on other issues and agreed to meet soon to continue promoting these and other aspects of bilateral collaboration.

The detachment of 101 members of the Contingent of Cuban Doctors ¨Henry Reeve¨ upon their arrival in Barbados in front of the monument to the Martyrs of Barbados near to Paynes Bay beach into whose waters the Cubana de Aviación aircraft sank on October 6, 1976, together with the Chief Medical Officer of the Barbados General Hospital and its General Director, as well as the Ambassadors of Barbados to the Caribbean and of Cuba in Barbados, David Comissiong and Sergio Jorge Pastrana, respectively.
