Minister of Public Health of Thailand welcomes the Ambassador of Cuba

BANGKOK, November 2, 2017.- The Minister of Public Health of Thailand, Prof. Emeritus Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, M.D., welcomed the Ambassador of Cuba, Héctor Conde Almeida, at the Ministry.

In the cordial meeting the good path of bilateral relations was confirmed and the mutual will to continue strengthening them was reiterated, with special mention to the historical significance of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between both countries to be celebrated in May 2018.

The Ambassador of Cuba thanked the Minister, the government and the people of Thailand for their vote in favor of the United Nations Resolution on the need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government against Cuba, adopted by the General Assembly on 1/11/2017 with 191 votes in favor, 2 against and no abstentions.

The Minister praised Cuba's achievements in public health, primary health care and biotechnology. Both parties agreed that the joint efforts in the medical-pharmaceutical production, for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases, constitute an important contribution in the implementation of the Development Strategy 4.0 in Thailand, aimed at increasing the competitiveness and sustainability of its socioeconomic model, in accordance with the national philosophy of sufficient economy. The importance of maintaining cooperation for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, the UN 2030 Agenda and promoting South-South cooperation was also reaffirmed.

At the invitation of the Cuban diplomat, the possible participation of a delegation from the Ministry of Public Health of Thailand in the International Convention on Public Health "CUBA-HEALTH 2018" was considered as a good opportunity for exchange and expansion of the joint cooperation actions. The International Convention will take place in Havana, from April 23 to 27, 2018.

Cuba and Thailand were the first and second countries in the world, in 2015 and 2016 respectively, to be validated by the World Health Organization (WHO) for having eliminated the transmission of acquired immunodeficiency virus (HIV-AIDS) and syphilis from mother to son.
