Barbadian Minister Trevor Prescod, Pan-African leader and profound admirer of Dr. Fidel Castro, was among the speakers gathered by the Barbados-Cuba Friendship Association (BCFA) to celebrate the 92nd birthday of the undefeated Commander in Chief, highlighting his legacy not only for Cuba but for the Caribbean, Africa and humanity, for which he appreciated the historic opportunity of having lived and worked under the imprint of his example and to see how the Cuban Revolution continues today to be victorious sharing its work among its sister nations. In an activity that featured the performance of the young artists Khalid Baston and Najumah Comissiong and the exhibition of the documentary "Prize for Virtue", which makes a very illustrative tour of Fidel's life, the Cuban ambassador Francisco Fernández thanked the tribute highlighting that this gift was joined to another very significant one that the Cuban people conferred on this same date, having initiated the period of citizen consultation on the project to amend the Constitution to reaffirm the validity of our Socialism and consolidate in its content the broad legacy of its artificer and most passionate defender.
The president of the BCFA, David Denny, highlighted the humanistic vocation and the integrationist sense of Fidel, concretized in the solidarity aid to Barbados and the Caribbean islands in numerous spheres. Veteran political activist "Bobby" Clarke emphasized the teachings of his entire revolutionary career and his educational work to the Cuban people, to which he always instilled his faith in victory, the sense of nationhood and the culture of resistance. Lawyer David Comissiong, present ambassador of Barbados to CARICOM, focused his analysis on the great Fidel´s contribution to the fight for the reparations of the slavery damages, arguing several of his ideas expressed in international forums, which in his opinion should be the basis of the current struggle of the Caribbean peoples. The Head of Mission of Venezuela, Álvaro Sánchez, showed with several examples the exemplary friendship that arose between the two unbeatable Commanders, Fidel and Chávez, their common roots in Martí and Bolivar thought, as well as the role played by the Cuban Revolution in its immeasurable support for the Bolivarian Revolution.
The president of the Pan-Africanists, Onkphra Wells, focused his message of solidarity on the value of Fidel's work for his contribution to the liberation of Africa and the validity of its principles to guide the struggle of people of African descent in particular and of humanity in general. Yaima Payne, president of the Association of Cuban Residents "Mártires de Barbados" celebrated the gigantic social work that transformed Cuban society, of which Cubans feel proud and defend it in all latitudes. The UWI professor Dr. Tennyson Joseph, concluded the session of the speakers expressing that the ideal way to keep this legacy alive is to honor his memory by fulfilling the moral obligation to train new generations with their own, critical, creative thinking and to promote deep revolutionary convictions to transform our societies and defeat the capitalist system with a sense of independence, sovereignty and self-determination.
