The Minister of Youth and Sports of Ghana, Hon. Mr. Isaac Kwame Asiamah, received the Cuban Ambassador to Ghana, Pedro Luis Despaigne Gonzalez at the headquarter of the Ministry.
The Ghanaian Minister and the Cuban Ambassador talked on the historical cooperation between the two countries in the field of the sports and expressed that the boxing is an activity of common interest, because Ghana and Cuba had had good performances in this sport and Cuba had been training Ghanaian boxers many years ago. The Minister also emphasized about the presence in Ghana of the Cuban doctors.
The Ambassador expose that the diplomatic relation Ghana-Cuba started in 1959, the same year of the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, and two years after the independence of Ghana. The Minister asked on the current situation of the U.S-Cuba relationship, and the Ambassador reaffirmed that the US blockade against Cuba remains in force, despite some measures taken by former US President Barack Obama. In the same way, he thanked the African governments for their solidarity with Cuba in the struggle in lifting the blockade.
The Minister received the Announcement of the 7th International Convention of Physical Activity and Sports (AFIDE 2017) to be held in Havana from November 20 – 24, 2017. The Minister thanked the information and expressed his interest to visit Cuba.
Other attendees at the meeting were the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Pius Enam Hadzike; the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr. Frank Quist; and the Technical Director, Dr. Emmanuel Owusu Ansch. The First Secretary of the Cuban Embassy also participated in the meeting.
