Myanmar and Cuba highlight progress in bilateral relations

NAY PYI TAW, August 20, 2019.- The Hon. Sr. Kyaw Tint Swe, Minister for the office of the State Counselor and Chancellor of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the Cuban ambassador, Héctor Conde Almeida, held a meeting in which both sides congratulated themselves on the good path of bilateral relations and reiterated the mutual will to continue expanding the ties of friendship between both peoples and governments.

The cordial exchange, in which the Directors General of International Organizations and the Political Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Asian country also participated, reaffirmed the importance of joining efforts in defense of the unity, dignity and sovereignty of the developing countries and to maintain close cooperation in the various multilateral forums, including those related to the achievement of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, South-South cooperation; the Latin America-East Asia Cooperation Forum (FEALAC); the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM); the Paris Agreement on climate change; as well as support for the United Nations Treaty of total prohibition of nuclear weapons.

The Cuban diplomat delivered the Report of Cuba, corresponding to 2019, pursuant to Resolution 73/8 of the United Nations General Assembly on the need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government against Cuba and thanked the support of the people and government of Myanmar for this important claim of the international community.

The Minister and the Ambassador of Cuba stressed the importance of the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in the public health sector; as well as ways of collaboration in fields such as education, biotechnology, sports and commerce, bilateral direction for the benefit of both peoples.
