President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah urged the international community to lift the sanctions imposed on Cuba, calling them illegal measures that violate sovereignty and the United Nations Charter.
During her first speech at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, the president made this strong statement, emphasizing that the sanctions against the largest of the Antilles undermine economic, financial, and trade stability and threaten its development.
“Unilateral coercive measures should not be used as tools to undermine the sovereignty of States,” she declared, adding that this violates the United Nations Charter and its principles and purposes.
Namibia's call to lift sanctions and remove Cuba from the list of states allegedly sponsors of terrorism follows the denunciations made by Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communists Party of Cuba and Minister of Foreign Affairs, during the update of Cuba's report pursuant to United Nations General Assembly Resolution 79/7, entitled "Need to end the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba," for the period March 2024–February 2025.
The archaic, unjust, and criminal policy of the US government is the main obstacle to the development and well-being of Cuban society, in addition to being a flagrant violation of human rights.
Intensified by the absurd and equally unjust inclusion of Cuba on the list of states allegedly sponsors of terrorism, it has become the spearhead of the powerful empire's sick hatred toward Cuba.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah reaffirmed Namibia's commitment to peace, multilateralism, sustainable development, and global reform, and reiterated her country's demand for comprehensive UN reform, particularly equitable African representation on the Security Council. "We must democratize global governance and amplify marginalized voices," she declared.
In conclusion, she reaffirmed Namibia's dedication to international law, solidarity, and peaceful coexistence. "Even the smallest nation has a voice. When those voices are heard and heeded, lasting peace and justice will prevail," she declared.
