The necessary unity of the countries of the South.

Vientiane January 2024. The Third South Summit concluded in the Ugandan capital with the challenge of continuing to work to foster cooperation and unity among our peoples. The Cuban delegation to the meeting was headed by the Vice President of the Republic, Salvador Valdés Mesa.

Unity, cooperation, complementarity and solidarity were essential principles that guided the work that took place during two intense days at the Third South Summit, whose closing session took place on Monday afternoon (local time), and was attended by the member of the Political Bureau and Vice President of the Republic of Cuba,  Salvador Valdés Mesa.

Considered by many of the participants as a milestone for the world, and an expression of the highest sense of collaboration among the countries of the South, the meeting was marked by the search for actions aimed at deepening cooperation for the development of our peoples. South-South cooperation, as recognized by many participants, including more than twenty heads of State and Government, has more than demonstrated the value of its exchanges.

In concluding remarks at the event, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, in his capacity as Chairman pro tempore of the Group of 77 and China, stressed the need to ensure that the prosperous development of all peoples, and not just a few, is only possible if all families participate in the generation of jobs and goods and services.  both as an employer and as an employee.

Aware of the need for the development of the economies of the South in order to benefit the populations of the countries, the President of Uganda stressed the importance of achieving peace at the global level, otherwise progress towards prosperity would not be possible.

"This group has much more potential than it seems, and if we work together we can achieve a lot," the president acknowledged after exemplifying how much has been done in this regard in construction, investment, food production and other projects.

It is impossible not to talk about Cuba and its legacy in these lands. "Cuba and Fidel Castro helped us build a medical school that is now very important; And Cuban doctors not only came here to treat patients here, but also to train our professionals," he recalled.

This Summit, also marked by respect and a constructive atmosphere among all countries, focused on the situation in Palestine, with widespread condemnation of Israel, solidarity with the Palestinian people and the demand for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

Other aspects addressed on a recurring basis were those referring to the important role of the Non-Aligned Movement in the international sphere; the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals agreed in the 2030 Agenda; confronting Climate Change; the reform of the United Nations, and the rejection of unilateral coercive measures, with special emphasis on the condemnation of the blockade against Cuba.
