Nicosia, Cyprus, June 11, 2026. The Cuban ambassador to Cyprus, Rubén Pino Martínez, was received this Wednesday, the 10th, at the Nicosia City Hall by its top authority, Mr Charalambos Prountzos.
During the courtesy visit initiated by the Cuban diplomat, both authorities exchanged in a context of cordiality, respect, and friendship, reflecting the historic ties that unite both peoples, with shared intentions to establish new proposals for joint collaboration and continue building cultural bridges between Cyprus and Cuba.
Supported by the intense activity generated by the Nicosia City Hall in the socio-cultural field and with the agreement of the capital’s mayor, the Cuban diplomat expressed his full willingness to collaborate on projects, agreements, or cultural and other exchanges that could be coordinated between the two nations from this important city.
Pino Martínez also thanked his host for the warm welcome while updating him on the difficult situation Cuba is currently facing as a result of the suffocating economic blockade and the energy siege imposed by the United States government on the island, with new sanctions that significantly worsen the living conditions of the Cuban people.
Mayor Prountzos deeply regretted the situation in which the Cuban nation finds itself and expressed solidarity and friendship that Cypriots feel towards Cuba. In this regard, he reflected on the fact that “those who promised to establish peace have ended up generating continuous wars and conflicts.” He also recognized that one of his dreams is to visit Cuba at some future time, a goal he hopes to achieve.
The mayor of Nicosia complimented the visitor on the current dynamic that the capital city is experiencing today, full of activity, partly due to the six-month presidency that Cyprus is assuming in the Council of the European Union --already about to end – which adds to it "an extra" with continuous cycles of meetings, appointments, commitments, and institutional events of various kinds.
In that context, he paid tribute to the Cuban diplomat, welcoming him to City Hall and reminding him that Nicosia is a city with over 3,000 years of continuous history, whose municipal seat is a place of great historical and symbolic value. To “Ledra” or the “White City,” as it has been known since ancient times—when it was one of the twelve ancient kingdoms of the Cypriot island—it has accumulated over these three millennia a central and strategic position within the island, with legacies and traces of French, Venetian, Turkish, and British rule, among many other cultures, which today distinguish, "enrich", and set it apart within the eastern Mediterranean.
From present-day Nicosia, its mayor also offered the Cuban ambassador all his personal support for any matters during his stay in Cyprus.
Before ending the meeting, Pino Martínez extended to the mayor a formal invitation to the International Colloquium “Fidel: Legacy and Future", which will be held from August 10 to 13, 2026, at the Palace of Conventions in Havana, in coordination with the Fidel Castro Center; the event will include, among other parallel activities, a Parliamentary Forum within the framework of the aforementioned International Colloquium.
