The Non-Aligned Movement calls for the lifting of all unilateral coercive measures, as a way to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic

New York, 27 March 2020. In a communiqué issued on 26 March, the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), called for solidarity and cooperation among States, recognizing that is the only way for detaining coronavirus and defeat this pandemic. In this regard, it called for setting aside all political ideologies and discrimination for the sake of all humankind.

NAM, which is currently chaired by Azerbaijan, appealed to the international community to adopt urgent and effective measures in order to eliminate all unilateral economic, financial or commercial measures, which have an impact in the capacity of affected States to efficiently respond to the pandemic.

“In the face of this type of global emergency, the spirit of Solidarity must be at the center of our efforts. A high level of ethical and humanist commitment is required, where Solidarity and selfless Cooperation prevail in order to provide the peoples in need with medicines, medical equipment and supplies, food, exchange of expertise and good practices” stated the Communiqué.

The Movement further recalled its longstanding principle in strong condemnation at the promulgation and application of unilateral coercive measures against Member States of the Movement, that are in violation of the Charter of the United Nations and international law, and stated that this principle had been reaffirmed by its Heads of State and Government in numerous Summits, including the 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in October 2019.
