The US administration must end its blockade on Cuba – Kearney
16 September 2026
Declan Kearney MLA has called on the US administration to end its blockade on Cuba. Essential services are being decimated and the Cuban people are being collectively punished.
Speaking in the Assembly the Sinn Féin National Chairperson said:
“The nearly seven decades-long US blockade of Cuba is a collective punishment of the Cuban people.
“It is a silent genocide that is morally wrong and politically indefensible.
“The intention of the US blockade is clear – to starve the Cuban people into submission in order to undermine the Republic of Cuba.
“Its recent escalation, including the deliberate targeting of Cuba’s energy and financial sectors, and threats of tariffs against countries supplying oil, has deepened an already grave humanitarian crisis.
“Cuba poses no military threat to the United States or other nations. Its longstanding contribution to international humanitarian and medical efforts stands in stark contrast to this campaign of economic coercion.
“The US blockade violates the principles of the UN Charter and defies repeated calls from the UN General Assembly for it to end.
“International solidarity with Cuba is now urgently needed.
“The US must return to multilateralism and diplomacy. Humanitarian aid must be allowed to reach the Cuban people without obstruction.”
