The Norwegian-Cuban Friendship Association, through a letter to the government and parliament of Norway, denounces the criminal nature of the US economic sanctions against Cuba.

Text of the letter:

To the Government of Norway

To Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre

To Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide

Let's make Norway's support for Cuba visible NOW!

On May 1, President Donald Trump issued another presidential order against Cuba that expands the use of coercive measures against anyone who maintains a relationship with the country. This order targets those who provide financial, material, and technological assistance and support, and aims to prevent investments, aid from humanitarian organizations, or individual tourist assistance.

These are criminal acts that clearly violate international law, the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, as well as several UN resolutions.

For Cuba, this represents an enormous danger, adding to the economic blockade that has existed for almost 70 years, the austerity measures of recent years, and the energy blockade introduced on January 29, 2016. The order attacks key sectors for Cuba, such as energy, tourism, mining, metallurgy, finance, and health, in order to intensify the economic strangulation.

No country has been able to manage its economy and maintain its survival under conditions of forced disconnection from international trade and finance, which is precisely what the US aggression against Cuba aims to achieve.

On May 7, the United States also imposed sanctions on two important Cuban companies, in addition to threats against anyone with any connection to them. One of these companies is fundamental to the tourism sector. The other is related to mining, especially nickel. Cuba possesses the world's largest reserves of nickel and cobalt, minerals considered strategic for the defense industry, electronics in general, and telecommunications. The Canadian company Sherritt International, a partner of the Cuban company in the extraction of nickel and cobalt, could cease its operations in Cuba.

The United States' collective punitive measures against the Cuban people will only have the destructive effect they seek if they succeed in instilling fear in the rest of the world. The effect depends on the stance adopted by each country, on its willingness to comply with the unilateral order of the US president or to demonstrate that it respects international law and, therefore, Cuba's right to self-determination and the right of other countries to assist the country in the cruel situation to which the United States is subjecting it.

In response to the recent actions of the United States and the inhumane boycott, we call on the Norwegian government to support our vote at the UN and strengthen our assistance and trade with Cuba. We urge the government to make Norway's position clear regarding the possibility of sending one or more oil tankers to Cuba, RIGHT NOW!
