New York, 28 January 2017. Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler, Historian of the City of Havana, participated in the presentation in the United States of “Nuestro Martí” multimedia short film, which is the product of a collaborative effort involving the Office under his leadership and the Google Company.
The event, held at the Sikkema Jenkins & Co art gallery in Manhattan, involved the participation of a large number of personalities of the field of culture, scholars, businessmen and representatives of other sectors in the city.
The speakers included Ms. Holly Block, Director of the Bronx Museum and enthusiastic supporter of this project, and Brett Perlmutter, Director of Strategy and Investment of Google Cuba. The remarks addressed by both speakers to those attending the event referred to the significance of this activity in order to strengthen bridges of friendship between the United States and Cuba and to the contribution that it represents for the knowledge about Jose Marti’s life and work, particularly in regards to the years when he lived and worked in this country.
Eusebio Leal pointed out that this presentation coincided with the 164th anniversary of the birth of the Cuban National Hero and thanked the organizers of the presentation for the efforts to make it happen.
He also dedicated part of his remarks to assess how important it was for Martí the time he lived in the United States and highlighted the bond of this event with the ongoing project to take to the historical center of the Cuban capital a replica of the statute of the Independence Apostle of Cuba located in New York Central Park.
In addition, he seized the opportunity to thank the United States institutions that have collaborated in promoting and collecting the funds required to produce the replica of the monument, as well as all those who have selflessly made contributions to this aim.
Dr. Leal will continue to carry out an intense working program in this city during the next few days and will hold a meeting with the staff of the Cuban diplomatic Mission. (Permanent Mission of Cuba in New York).
