Copenhagen, June 21 – Today the Danish-Cuban Association of Friendship conveyed a statement to the US Embassy in Denmark, in protest at the Helms Burton Act and the escalation of the blockade imposed by Washington against Cuba.
The text was joined by 18 organizations and a number of Danish personalities such as Mogens Lykketoft, former president of the Danish Parliament, former president of the United Nations General Assembly and former foreign minister; Villy Sovndal, former foreign minister; Christian Juhl, Deputy Speaker of the Danish Parliament; Ole Nors Nielsen, representative of the National Board of the 3F Trade Union, among other politicians and intellectuals in Denmark. The statement was also distributed to the Danish press.
The document condemned the extension and tightening of the US blockade by Trump’s administration, including the activation of Title III of the Helms Burton Act that violates international law, Cuban sovereignty and hinders investments by third countries in Cuba as well as their business relationships.
The personalities and organizations signatories of the declaration called for an end of the blockade against Cuba and demanded the US government to respect the claim of the 189 countries that voted in favor of lifting that illegal, criminal and unfair policy at the United Nations headquarter in 2018, while stated that blockade causes damages to the people and the Cuban economy, valued at more than 10 million USD each day.
The statement was signed by eight Danish trade union organizations; the communist parties of Denmark; two political parties of the Danish youth and the international office of the Unity List Party; the solidarity groups Patria Grande and Salvador Allende; the Solidarity Committee with the DPR of Korea; Workers of the Housing Association, among other organizations.
The declaration conveyed to the US diplomatic mission in Copenhagen embodied a clear message from solidarity groups, political and trade union organizations as well as Danish personalities who addressed the text to the US president and to the members of the US Congress, in condemnation of the strengthening of the blockade against Cuba.
