‘Our relay is guaranteed’, says a Cuban nurse in Jamaica

Nurse Gladys Martínez supports today Jamaica's response to the Covid-19 pandemic, proud of the internationalism that characterizes the Cuban health system.

Kingston, Jamaica, 10 June 2020. Nurse Gladys Martínez supports today Jamaica's response to the Covid-19 pandemic, proud of the internationalism that characterizes the Cuban health system.

After her arrival on March 21 as a member of the Henry Reeve contingent’s supporting brigade, the Cuban professional with 22 years of experience contributes to the well-being of the Jamaican people from her new trench: the Comprehensive Health Centre in Kingston.

There, this Grade One Specialist in Maternal-Child Nursing attends mostly children and elderly people suffering from chronic diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure and bronchial asthma; although she has also been trained in the treatment of suspected cases of SAR-CoV-2, the cause of Covid-19.

Talking to Prensa Latina via Internet, she stated her pride for representing Cuban internationalism for the first time and being one of the protagonists of the global battle against the Covid-19 pandemic today.

The paediatric nurse told Prensa Latina about the good working relationships with Jamaican colleagues and the expressions of respect and brotherhood they have received from patients and Government authorities, who show their gratitude and love daily.

In her words, she left her relay guaranteed in her home city of Santiago de Cuba, since her daughter Wendy is studying the first year of a nursing degree course, under the guidance and care of her relatives.
