“…On the centennial of the birth of Comandante Fidel Castro Ruz, we do not speak of a foreign statesman. We speak of a brother of Africa's liberation… the independence of Southern Africa was not won by Africans alone. When the apartheid regime of South Africa deployed its armor into Angola to crush the sovereignty of a newly independent African state, it was Fidel Castro who answered Africa's call, not with statements, but with soldiers. Hundreds of thousands of Cuban internationalists crossed the Atlantic to stand with Angola. At the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale, that partnership shattered the apartheid army's claim to invincibility, hastened Namibian independence, and accelerated the collapse of apartheid itself...”
