Parliamentary leader reaffirms New Zealand's interest in promoting greater ties with Cuba

Wellington, September 19th, 2019. The chairperson of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Trade of the New Zealand parliament, Simon O'Connor, received the Cuban Ambassador Mario Alzugaray at Parliament House and confirmed New Zealand's interest in deepening ties and areas of cooperation with Cuba.

During the meeting, both parties exchanged on various issues of international affairs, as well as the state of bilateral relations and the interest of both nations in promoting greater exchanges.

The Cuban diplomat explained the current state of relations between Cuba and the United States, with special emphasis on the resurgence of the economic, financial and commercial blockade against our country and detailing the impact and scope of the blockade and the latest measures taken by the Trump administration, including the application of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act. At the same time, he thanked the local parliamentary leader, his country's position of rejection of the US blockade, states in support of the resolution condemning this policy that is approved every year within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly.
