The Permanent Representative of Singapore to the United Nation calls for the lifting of the US blockade on behalf of ASEAN on the reopening of Debate in July 7th 2026

Singapore, July 7th, 2026.

July 7, the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of debating about U.S. Blockade against Cuba.
Once again, it was demonstrated that—despite pressure from that government—justice prevails in the defense of the Cuban cause, as does the stance of the vast majority of governments in opposing this illegal, extraterritorial, and unjust blockade.
⚖️The vote to open that debate:
➡️136 nations in favour
➡️9 against, led by the United States and 30 abstentions
It was a resounding called from International Community against US blockade

Permanent Representative of Singapore to UN, H.E Burhan Gafoor, on behalf of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) expressed concern about the “deep impact of the present situation on the Cuban people,” including on their access to food, medicine and other essential supplies.
“It is fundamentally the well-being of ordinary Cubans that lies at the heart of our shared concern,” he affirmed.

He underlined the need to remove the measures that have led to the current situation, stressing that fuel export restrictions have aggravated Cuba’s energy crisis and hampered its ability to address climate-related natural disasters.

“Differences between States are best addressed through dialogue and engagement, underpinned by mutual respect,” he argued.

He calls on the United States to lift the embargo and remove #Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
