Cairo, February 11, 2026. Medhat El-Zahed, leader of the Popular Socialist Alliance Party, announced the party's full solidarity with the Republic of Cuba in the face of the latest US escalation, which reflects the continuation of the blockade and economic pressure policy outside the bounds of international law.
El-Zahed stated that the recent decisions by the US government, which seek to tighten economic restrictions and impose extraterritorial measures on countries that trade with Cuba, represent a clear violation of the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and an infringement upon the sovereignty of states and their national independence in decision-making.
He added that the continuation of the economic embargo imposed on Cuba for more than six decades has only caused human suffering to the Cuban people, without breaking their will or undermining their national choice, and emphasized that the use of economic sanctions as a tool of collective punishment contradicts the most basic principles of justice and equity.
The leader of the Popular Socialist Alliance Party pointed out that Cuba has presented a model of resilience and defense of its independence, and has played a prominent humanitarian role in the areas of health, education, and international cooperation, despite the difficult economic conditions imposed by the embargo. He argued that attempts to portray Cuba as a threat to U.S. national security lack both political and objective logic.
Al-Zahid explained that what is happening reflects a double standard in international relations, where serious violations in various regions of the world are overlooked, while maximum pressure is exerted against countries that have chosen an independent path in their policies. He urged the international community to adopt a more cohesive stance in defending the principles of sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.
He stated that the party considers these measures an unjustified escalation that will increase international tensions and undermine opportunities for dialogue, emphasizing that political solutions and equitable dialogue between states are the only way to address disputes, far removed from policies of blockade and sanctions.
Al-Zahid urged political forces, progressive parties, and civil society organizations in the region and around the world to “declare their clear solidarity with the Cuban people and reject any measures aimed at depriving them of food or isolating them economically,” emphasizing that “defending Cuba today is defending the principle of national sovereignty and the right of peoples to freely choose their political and economic systems.”
He concluded his speech by emphasizing that "the Popular Socialist Alliance Party will continue to express its support for the Cuban people and their right to development and sovereignty, and rejects any unilateral policy that imposes a fait accompli outside of international law and international legitimacy."
