Nicosia, Cyprus, March 11, 2026. The President of the Parliament of the Republic of Cyprus, Her Excellency Mrs. Annita Demetriou, received in a courtesy visit and as his first official meeting, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Cyprus, Rubén Pino Martínez, after he presented his credentials to the local government on February 20.

The also President of the DISY Party offered a warm and fraternal welcome to the Cuban diplomat at the usual headquarters of the House of Representatives in Nicosia, a meeting in which both parties reiterated their mutual gratitude for attending this scheduled meeting, which aims to deepen and diversify relations between the respective Parliaments and the legislative authorities of both nations.

During the day, a cordial and respectful exchange was promoted, where the Cuban diplomat updated the highest representative of the Cypriot parliament on the situation that Cuba is currently experiencing as a consequence of the sixty-year-old U.S. blockade policy and the executive order issued last January 29 by President Trump to prevent the access of oil to the island, and its terrible consequences for Cuba.

Mrs. Demetriou reiterated her gratitude that this meeting could take place even amid the current context of difficult circumstances and instability in the Eastern Mediterranean region, and even considering the harsh conditions that Cuba faces today, pointing out that "it is very valuable to have reciprocal support between peoples and friendly parliaments, for what it means to overcome them and move forward".

For his part, the Cuban diplomat reiterated the firm commitment to continue strengthening the positive bilateral relations through diplomatic, political, and parliamentary channels, and to continue contributing to preserving the historic friendship that unites both countries; not without first expressing special thanks to his host for her solidarity with Cuba and for receiving him amidst such a busy and committed schedule.

At the same time as wishing him success and a fruitful stay and mission in Cyprus, Anita Demetriou offered Pino Martínez all the support possible from her work team, in order to further strengthen relations and mechanisms of interparliamentary international cooperation between the two nations.
