Wellington, February 15, 2016. In a brief meeting with the Ambassador of Cuba, Mario Alzugaray, Kiribati President Anote Tong, praised the cooperation that Cuba develops with the Pacific Islands, in particular the scholarships for medical studies provided to young i-Kiribati in universities across the Caribbean island, as well as the work of Cuban doctors in this nation and its impact on the improvement of its health indicators.
The Cuban diplomat, on his side, expressed the appreciation of his Government to President Tong for his role in further strengthening bilateral relations and in support of the involvement of Cuba as a Dialogue Partner of the Pacific Islands Forum.
The meeting took place within the framework of the conference In the Eye of the Storm: Pacific Climate Change Conference 2016, held today at Victoria University, Kilbirnie campus. President Anote Tong, who has championed awareness of the impact of climate change in the Pacific Region, was among keynote speakers in this event.
