Press Release: 71 UNGA: Cuba reiterates its absolute commitment to promote and strengthen a true Rule of Law.

New York, 5 October 2016. In the Agenda item “The rule of law at the national and international levels”, the delegate of Cuba to the Sixth Committee, Tanieris Diéguez Lao, reiterated today the absolute commitment of the Cuban Government to promote and strengthen a true rule of law, in order to change the unjust international order and to work for a broad and profound reform of the Security Council, to turn it into in an inclusive, transparent and democratic body which reflects the genuine interests of the international community, in accordance with the principles and purposes enshrined in the US Charter.

As part of her statement, the Cuban diplomat noted that a true rule of law, more than constituting formal and technically perfect laws requires unwavering abdication of any act or unilateral measure, including the promulgation or implementation of extraterritorial laws, as well as, the politically-motivated exercise of the jurisdiction of national or international tribunals. Hence, on Cuba’s  behalf she condemned and demanded the immediate suppression of the group of extraterritorial norms that set up the economic, commercial and financial Embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba for more than 50 years and called upon complying, without any further delay, with the innumerable resolutions adopted by the General Assembly on the item and with paragraph 9 of the High-Level Declaration on Rule of Law, Resolution 67/1, stating as follows: “States are strongly urged to refrain from promulgating and applying any unilateral economic, financial or trade measures not in accordance with international law and the Charter of the United Nations that impede the full achievement of economic and social development, particularly in developing countries.” (Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations)
