New York, 11 October 2016. The Cuban delegate to the Sixth Committee, Tanieris Diéguez Lao, on Agenda item "Report of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization", underscored the importance for respect and promotion of the norms of the UN Charter, as well as, the preservation and strengthening of the leading role of the General Assembly, in its capacity of primary policy-making body, deliberation and representation of the United Nations.
The delegate added that the Special Committee of the UN Charter should promote and be open to full debate of all resolution proposals, decision or action-taking by UN organs, when they have implications for the fulfillment and implementation of the Organization’s Charter. While highlighting that the number of initiatives presented along the year reflect the importance and necessity of the works of the Special Committee, she pointed out that some delegations continue to hamper its works, making impossible the adoption of valuable documents that govern and strengthen the works of the United Nations.
Within this framework, the Cuban delegate stated Cuba’s opposition to any attempt to reduce the works of the Committee and its Agenda, and encouraged the delegations to present substantive proposals and participate constructively in the debates. After appreciating the contributions through concrete proposals, of NAM and the delegations of Venezuela, Belarus, Russia and Ghana, she thanked the Committee on the UN Charter and its President, for its conscientious endeavors.
