Press release: CARICOM - Cuba, A more united, meaningful and stronger relationship.

Nassau, 8 December 2018 - On the occasion of the 46th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations among the independent states of CARICOM and Cuba and the 16th anniversary of CARICOM-Cuba Day, the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Nassau commemorates such important dates. To mark the occasion, a full programme of activities has been carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba with the participation of CARICOM diplomatic missions accredited to Havana.

CARICOM Member States and Cuba have enjoyed close, respectful and meaningful ties, beginning in 1972 with the establishment of the earliest diplomatic relations between Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago. The Bahamas joined the group in 1974 and has made a significant contribution throughout the years.  

Sharing a Caribbean identity and a high level of bilateral and political relations, our nations continue to work together to face common problems and vulnerabilities. We are all proud of the achievements reached in the economic and social fields during these decades.

FACTS

The first Caricom-Cuba Summit was held in Havana, 2002. At that time, the Heads of State and Government of CARICOM and Cuba declared December 8th as CARICOM-Cuba Day.

Throughout this year, 24 visits by Ministers from 12 countries of the Caribbean region have arrived in Cuba.

1 773 Cuban collaborators are currently working in Caribbean countries, 1 454 of them in the health sector.

To date, 6 623 Caribbean youngsters have graduated in Cuban universities. At present, 1 094 are studying in the largest island of the Antilles.

All CARICOM member countries have diplomatic missions in Havana, Cuba.

The Caribbean has maintained a consistent foreign policy in defense of the full regional integration.

Let us continue to strengthen our relations on the basis of solidarity, friendship, gratitude and regional cooperation.
