New York, 16 June 2017.Cuba acknowledged the worthiness of the draft of the Convention for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which is under discussion within the framework of the UN Conference to Negotiate a Legally Binding Instrument to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons, Leading towards their Total Elimination, being held at the United Nations headquarters, in New York, and which will conclude next 7 July.
While addressing the Conference, the Head of the Department of Multilateral Political Affairs at the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rodolfo Benítez Versón, emphasized that never before has the international community been so close to achieve the permanent prohibition of nuclear weapons, and called to keep up with the historical opportunity for the United Nations to establish, in 2017, the legal prohibition of nuclear weapons.
He highlighted such nuclear-weapon-ban will be a paramount step forward towards its definite elimination from the face of earth, to the benefit of present and future generations, who have the legitimate right to live in a world without the permanent threat of nuclear weapons.
