New York, 18 April 2017. As part of the event convened by the President of the General Assembly, “High-level SDG Financing Lab”, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, emphasized today that the fulfillment of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda will only be possible, with firm commitments and greater political will to mobilize additional, predictable and unconditioned resources so that developing countries may meet the new and ambitious development goals.
While considering the great efforts and the deep political will of developing countries, to accomplish international commitments in terms of financing, she stated that such efforts shall be supported by the cooperation of developed countries, in key areas such as: technology transfer, development of capacities, official development assistance, international financial cooperation and north-south cooperation.
Likewise, the Cuban representative condemned the persistent unilateral coercive measures against developing countries which hinder their inclusive economic growth and, hence, the promotion of sustainable development.
She considered that there is still much to be done within the United Nations for major boost and palpable results in financing for development and conveyed Cuba´s concern as regards the position of some delegations to gradually weaken discussions on the issue within the General Assembly.
At the end of her statement, the Cuban diplomat once again reiterated Cuba’s commitment, political will and readiness towards international cooperation for the strengthening of debates and tangible outcomes in financing for development.
