New York, 23 May 2018.During the High-Level Debate convened by the President of the United Nations General Assembly, to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, Yillianne Sánchez Rodríguez, Diplomatic Attaché of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations, indicated that the so-called "Merida Convention" is the only binding instrument of almost universal scope to analyze issues related to the prevention and fight against global corruption.
She also indicated that it is important to preserve and defend the fundamental principles of the Convention and its Review Mechanism, in particular its intergovernmental, non-punitive nature based on cooperation and exchange of experiences and good practices.
Referring to the island, she explained that the first cycle to review the implementation of the Convention in 2013 had been successfully completed, demonstrating strong commitment of the Cuban State, Government and people in fighting corruption. She added that the country is currently in the preparatory stage for the second review cycle, scheduled for the second half of 2018, when the commitment to the objectives and purposes of the Convention and its Review Mechanism will be reaffirmed.
