New York, 19 June 2017. On behalf of the Cuban delegation and following the adoption of draft resolution on the question of Puerto Rico, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, thanked all members of the Special Committee on Decolonization and the other delegations that spoke on the issue, for the strong and valuable support to the adoption of the resolution, once again, by consensus.
On this occasion, she underscored the important contributions made by the petitioners, as well as the exceptional opportunity to count on the presence of Oscar López Rivera, now as a witness to the debates and commitment to work towards the decolonization of all peoples that have not yet been able to exercise their right to self-determination.
The Cuban representative reiterated to the Puerto Rican people the unwavering solidarity of the Cuban people, and confirmed Cuba will continue to defend the legitimate right of the people of Puerto Rico to self-determination and independence with the irrevocable commitment to accompany them towards their final victory.
