New York, 14 July 2017. Cuba addressed today the Panel on the review of Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2 and 3, as part of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
In this context, the Head of the Department of Economic Affairs of the Multilateral Affairs and International Law Division at the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ileydis Valiente, described with figures the social achievements of Cuba in the fields of healthcare and education. She highlighted that the nation counts with an infant mortality rate of 4,3 per 1000 live births, which positions it among the first 20 nations worldwide and at the forefront in Latin America.
“There is no illiteracy and our life expectancy at birth is of more than 78.5 years of age, which proves higher rates than in many developed countries”, she noted after highlighting the universal, accessible and free-of-charge nature, for all the population, of the Cuban healthcare system.
