Press Release: "Cuba joins, at the United Nations, the commemorative meeting on International Mother Earth Day".

New York, 21 April 2017. Cuba participated today in the United Nations General Assembly Interactive dialogue on Harmony with Nature, to commemorate the International Mother Earth Day.

At this forum, the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo defined that consumer societies are mainly responsible for the atrocious destruction of the environment. She noted that harmony with nature and mankind´s wellbeing cannot be achieved, as long as the same capitalist consumption and production patterns are followed.

She considered that climate change is a global threat which also calls for global, just, equitable, and balanced solutions that involve all countries worldwide.

She demanded unrestricted respect for the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and the right to development, while underscoring that everything that contributes today to underdevelopment and poverty constitutes a flagrant violation of ecology.

The Cuban diplomat highlighted the importance, not only of generating and fostering social awareness, but also political will of developed countries, in the fulfillment of their international commitments with developing countries. She reiterated Cuba’s commitment in the promotion of balanced integration of the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development, through Harmony with Nature.
