Press Release: Cuba reaffirms the importance of the Charter of the United Nations and the leading role of the General Assembly in the work of the United Nations.

New York, 20 February 2018.The promotion of respect for the Charter of the United Nations, as well as the preservation and strengthening of the leading role of the General Assembly as the principal normative, deliberative, policy-making and representative body of the United Nations, are vitally important, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations said during her statement to the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and of the strengthening of the role of the organization.

The relevance and importance of this Committee, particularly in the current international context where some countries repeatedly attempt to impose reinterpretations of the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations in order to promote interventionist and interfering political agendas, to the detriment of the integrity and sovereignty of developing countries, was also particularly stressed by the Cuban diplomat, who also condemned the continuous attempts to hinder the work of this important organ.

Rodríguez Abascal recognized the Special Committee as the enabling environment to negotiate any amendment to the Charter of the United Nations and to propose recommendations that favor the implementation of all the provisions contained in this significant instrument.
