New York, 11 January 2018. The Permanent Representative of Cuba to the UN, Ambassador Anayansi Rodríguez, emphasized the need to tackle the root causes of the large irregular migratory flows that are occurring in the world today.
In her address at the meeting for the presentation of the Secretary-General's Report on the Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration, the Cuban diplomat stressed that it is imperative to change the current situation of poverty, inequality and inequity prevailing in developing countries, as a way to find a lasting solution to the phenomenon of migration.
The Cuban representative also addressed other relevant topics that should be part of the Global Compact, such as measures to eliminate the barriers that are currently being constructed to hinder migration and do not resolve the causes of this phenomenon; the recognition of the shared responsibility of all States in addressing this problem; as well as the need that the actions undertaken to comply with the Compact must observe the principles of respect for the sovereignty and equality of all States and the integrity, dignity and well-being of migrants and their families, including protection and full respect of their rights.
Rodríguez also reviewed other elements of interest included in the text presented, relating to the ideas presented by the Secretary-General in terms of management and governance of international migration in the current context and the ideas on the reformulation of the role to be played by the UN after the adoption of the Compact.
To conclude, the Cuban Ambassador reiterated that Cuba, as it has done so far, will continue to participate actively and constructively in the process of intergovernmental negotiations on the issue that will begin shortly.
The report presented by the Secretary-General will be one of the main contributions to the preliminary draft of the Global Compact for a safe, orderly and regular migration that will begin to be negotiated at the United Nations headquarters in February and will culminate with the adoption of this text in an Intergovernmental Conference to be held in Morocco by the end of 2018.
