Press release: Cuba reiterates its support for the legitimate rights of the Republic of Argentina in the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands.

New York, June 21, 2018.In her statement at the meeting of the United Nations Committee on Decolonization devoted to the analysis of item: Question of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the organization, Ambassador Anayansi Rodriguez Camejo, reiterated the unrestricted support of the Caribbean island for the legitimate right of the Argentine Republic in the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands, the South Georgia islands and the South Sandwich Islands as well as the surrounding maritime areas that constitute part of the national territory of this sister Latin American country.

She added that this has also been reiterated at the highest level in different Latin American forums, including the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

Rodríguez Camejo also insisted that carrying out military exercises in the geographic areas of the Malvinas Islands is contrary to the Proclamation of Latin America as a zone of peace and to the pacifist stance expressed by the 33 Latin American and Caribbean nations; at the same time, it damages the sovereign rights of Argentina and contravenes resolutions adopted by international forums, among them the United Nations.

The Cuban diplomat reiterated once again the call for a negotiated, just and definitive solution to the question of the Malvinas islands in the shortest time possible, which takes into account both the respect for the territorial integrity of Argentina.

She also ratified that Cuba will continue to work within the framework of International Law, and in particular, of resolution 1514 (XV) of the General Assembly of the United Nations to make the Latin American and Caribbean region a territory free of colonialism and colonies.
