New York, February 20, 2018.In her statement at the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the Work of the General Assembly of the United Nations, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the organization, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, reaffirmed the role of the General Assembly as the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the United Nations. She also said that the process of revitalization of this main organ is an essential requirement to achieve a more efficient and effective organization.
Rodríguez Abascal stressed that the reform process of the UN should result in the revitalization of the General Assembly and with it the consolidation of its democratic and participatory nature.
The Cuban diplomat stressed the importance that the United Nations truly responds to the collective interests of its Member States, which would guarantee the legitimacy and sustainability of the international community's confidence in the organization.
On behalf of Cuba, she advocated the cessation of the growing and dangerous tendency of the Security Council to invade the sphere of action of the General Assembly and called on the Member States of the UN to show their political will and commitment to multilateralism; as well as to prioritize full respect for the Charter of the United Nations.
