Press Release: Cuba urges to continue strengthening the accountability, transparency and institutional memory of the United Nations General Assembly.

New York, April 27, 2018.In her speech at the Thematic Debate on Strengthening the Accountability, Transparency and Institutional Memory of the Office of the President of the General Assembly, held within the framework of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the Work of the General Assembly, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the organization, Ana Silvia Rodriguez Abascal, pointed out that for Cuba the strengthening of the accountability, transparency and institutional memory of the General Assembly is fundamental in the success of the works of its President.

Rodriguez Abascal acknowledged that it is essential to inform the Member States about the work carried out by the President of the General Assembly. This transparency in its management constitutes a form of accountability, contributing to the achievement of the purposes of the United Nations and reaffirming its commitment to the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, she said.

The Cuban diplomat considered the communications issued by the President of the General Assembly in this period to be positive; which contain a summary of the meetings held with the Presidency of the Economic and Social Council and the Security Council. This, she argued, shows the transparency in the management of the President of the UNGA, since he provides the Member States with relevant information from the quantitative and qualitative point of view and in a timely manner.

She also said that the systematic updating of the website of the President of the General Assembly and that of the Plenary is praiseworthy, since it facilitates the proactive work of the delegations.
