New York, April 17, 2018. Yesterday afternoon, at the Coordination and Management Segment of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Cuba was elected, by acclamation, a member of several subsidiary bodies of the Council.
Cuba has earned world recognition and respect due to its achievements as a nation and its actions in the world arena, in accordance with the spirit, purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. This has resulted in its recent election as a member of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, for the period 2019-2021; the Commission on Science and Technology for Development, for the period 2019-2022; the Commission on the Status of Women, for the period 2019-2023 and of the UN-Women Executive Board, for the period 2019-2021.
On the same day, Cuba was also elected, by vote, a member of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations of the United Nations, for the period 2019-2022. The island achieved the highest number of votes of the Latin America and Caribbean region.
