New York, February 2nd, 2018. The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo, met, in the afternoon of February 1st, with the Secretary General of the Organization, Mr. Antonio Guterres, in her capacity as Acting Chair of the Special Committee on the situation with regard to the implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples. The Cuban Ambassador was accompanied by the Permanent Representative of Indonesia and the Deputy Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone, who attended as Vice-Chairmen of the Committee. The Deputy Permanent Representative of Syria, in his capacity as Rapporteur of the body, also attended the meeting.
During the meeting, held in a friendly environment, the Cuban diplomat submitted the Secretary General a brief oral report on the activities carried out during 2017 by the Decolonization Committee, as this body is also known, and on the decisions adopted by the 29 members of the Committee. She also outlined the main activities planned for this year 2018, which include the annual meeting of the Committee, the sending of a Visiting Mission to the territory of New Caledonia to confirm the registration process of the inhabitants in order to exercise self-determination in the fall of this year, and the holding of the Regional Seminar on Decolonization, to be held in the coming months in the Pacific region.
During the meeting, the Secretary General reiterated his commitment to the Decolonization agenda, which he described as one of the decisive mandates of the world body and confirmed his presence, at the end of February, at the meeting of the Committee to choose the new management of this important body of the United Nations.
