On behalf of Cuba, she said that the nearly 10-year blockade of the Gaza Strip, which plunges more than two million Palestinians into a deep socio-economic and humanitarian crisis, must be stopped immediately.
The Cuban diplomat reiterated that as long as the current situation of the Palestinian people is maintained, it will be a duty and a priority for the Non-Aligned Movement to assume the defense of the legitimate rights of that people and to strongly condemn the military occupation of their territories.
Rodríguez Abascal reaffirmed that Cuba will continue to defend the right of Palestinians to self-determination, to have a free, independent and sovereign State, with its capital in East Jerusalem and with the pre-1967 borders as well as the return of Palestinian refugees; it will also maintain its support for the admission of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations.
Likewise, she called upon the Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities under the Charter and to guarantee the end of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territory, pointing out that it is unacceptable that that body should continue to be held hostage or threatened by the veto from the United States.
