Press Release: Despite the obstacle imposed by the blockade, Cuba reiterates its commitment with the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

New York, 17 May 2017. As part of the Event on Connectivity and Innovation convened by the President of the General Assembly, the delegate of Cuba, Yilianne Sánchez Rodríguez, referred today to the digital divide between developed and developing countries which makes it impossible not only to have connectivity, but also to use technologies for sustainable development.

In this regard, she reaffirmed Cuba’s call for the transfer, dissemination and diffusion of technologies to developing countries, as well as the exchange of knowledge, which she considered requires greater political will and solidarity on the part of developed countries in terms of financing for the sustainable development of peoples in need. Furthermore, she noted that it is necessary to establish a democratic multilateral internet governance model.

The Cuban delegate highlighted the international recognition of the achievements in the quality of life of the Cuban people, thanks to the efforts of the State in development of Science, Technology and Innovation for social benefit. Thereon, she stressed the impact of the blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States government as the main obstacle to our country’s development and to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, with records of an impact to the Communications and Information Technology sector of 59 million 208 thousand 700 dollars, as of last year only.

While emphasizing the unconditional nature of Cuba’s support to sustainable and equitable development, the Cuban diplomat reiterated the commitment of the Caribbean nation to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
