New York, May 17, 2018. On the evening of May 15, the members of the "December 12th Movement" welcomed Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo, to the mythical New York City locality of Brooklyn. She took the opportunity to thank for the support that Cuba has always received from the American people since the triumph of the Revolution, including from the members of this Movement, with deep roots in the solidarity movement with Cuba in the United States.
The exchange became an emotional remembrance of the historic meeting of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz with African American leader Malcolm X and the friendship between them, on the occasion of the visit of the former to New York, in 1960, to participate in the Fifteenth Session of the UN General Assembly.
The Cuban diplomat gave an update on the current situation of relations between the two countries and the regression experienced, calling on the members of the "December 12th Movement" to strengthen the struggle against the blockade, which the current US administration persists in tightening.
Rodríguez Camejo also reflected on the recently concluded process of general elections in Cuba, from which emerged the new Council of State and its President, comrade Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, who synthesized the continuity of the Cuban revolutionary process and the maintenance of its foreign policy, focused on favoring the just causes of the world and defending the oppressed. She explained how the current National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba has been constituted, including 53.2% of women; the average age is 49 years, showing the commitment of the youth with the Revolution; 47.4 of the parliamentarians are grassroots delegates; while 40.66% are blacks and mestizos; and it has a broad representation of all sectors of Cuban society.
December 12th is an African American movement founded 30 years ago, whose roots are in the American civil rights movement of the 60s and in leaders like Malcolm X.
