Press Release: Friends of Cuba pay tribute to Commander Fidel in New York.

New York, November 28, 2017. Members of the solidarity movement with Cuba in New York paid tribute to the figure and work of the Historical leader of the Revolution, Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz, during the emotional political-cultural ceremony, held at the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations. The tribute was accompanied by a selection of photos of the Commander by Prensa Latina, exhibited once again for the enjoyment of the attendees.

Gail Walker, General Director of the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO) / Pastors for Peace and daughter of the dear friend of the Cuban Revolution Reverend Lucius Walker, told the audience about her impressions of the first time she saw the Commander and the deep respect and admiration that he inspired in his father.

She pointed out that the most relevant qualities she saw in Fidel were his modesty and ability to listen to everyone, which was not supposed to be find in a globally recognized figure and yet he was able to pay attention to the most common man.

She recognized that the Latin American School of Medicine is one of the most brilliant works of the Commander, in which not only poor young people of the third world, but also of the United States, have studied, and whose ultimate goal is to improve the lives of the dispossessed of the world.

Ike Nahem, Coordinator of the July 26th Coalition, recounted how his trip to Cuba in 1980 was a turning point in his life and led him to make known the Cuban reality to his family and friends who began to have a different vision of what Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution meant, which has always been far different from what the main media of the empire tell.

Other friends of the solidarity movement, such as Teresa Gutiérrez, Coordinator in New York of the Workers Party, Frank Vergara of the Pro-Freedom Movement, Radamés Morales of the Revolution Force Party and Roger Wareham of the December 12th Movement, praised the exemplary nature of the Commander, his commitment with the Cuban people and with the dispossessed of the planet; his support for the anti-colonialist struggles in Africa, Asia and Latin America and his confrontation with the imperialist powers. They regretted that he had deceased, especially now that an extreme right-wing government such as Donald Trump's is threatening the world and has reversed the policy of normalizing relations between the United States and Cuba.

During the meeting many long live Fidel and Fidel is here were heard! Tears were shed, but more than anything, sincere love was felt towards an exceptional human being who gave it all for a better world.
