New York, August 14, 2017.The 91st anniversary of the birth of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz was commemorated in this city in a moving ceremony.
The meeting, held at the Downtown Community Television Center (DCTV), an institution dedicated to the teaching of audiovisual arts, was attended by a large representation of activists from the Solidarity Movement with Cuba in the United States, Ambassadors and diplomatic officials from several friendly countries of Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and Europe, as well as all the staff of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations.
While delivering the central speech of the event, the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo, emphasized the privilege that it meant for several generations of Cubans and friends of Cuba to have had the presence, guidance and teachings of Fidel.
Referring to the legacy of the revolutionary Leader, the Cuban diplomat stressed his political, ethical and human lessons, highlighting among others the value of unity, resistance, solidarity and internationalism.
Fidel -she said- “taught us that principles are not negotiable and that we must uphold our principles at the price of any sacrifice; to live with dignity; to raise our voice against injustice; to never give up” and pointed out that today, when the intention is to resume the obsolete policy of hostility towards Cuba and to intensify the blockade, his ideas remain fully valid. “We will never be able to speak about Fidel in the past tense. I am sure this is the feeling of everyone gathered here today”, she asserted.
The event also served as the setting for the screening of documentary films about Fidel Castro´s life and work, produced by renowned American journalists and filmmakers Saul Landau (now deceased) and Jon Alpert, the latter founder and director of DCTV.
