New York, May 16, 2018. The Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo, met today with Henrietta H. Fore, Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). At the meeting they discussed the excellent relations between the island and the Children's Fund and ratified the will of both parties to continue strengthening them.
In the meeting were underlined Cuba's important achievements for the well-being of its girls and boys, including its validation as the first country in the world certified free from mother-to-child transmission of HIV and congenital syphilis. Cuba also reached the lowest infant mortality rate in its history with a figure of 4.0 per thousand live births.
In particular, reference was made to South-South cooperation as a central feature of Cuban foreign policy which could be a significant complement to UNICEF projects in several developing countries, especially in the health care field.
Likewise, reference was made to the important contribution of UNICEF to humanitarian assistance in disaster situations, and at such a moment the rapid response of the Fund after the passage of Hurricane Irma through Cuba was appreciated. The Executive Director expressed the willingness to continue supporting Cuba in the face of the upcoming hurricane season.
