Press release: The revitalization process of the General Assembly must strengthen its role and authority.

New York, March 9, 2018.The General Assembly is the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the United Nations and its revitalization process, particularly the strengthening of its role and authority, should have as a premise the consolidation of its democratic and participatory nature; stated the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo at the thematic meeting focusing on the Role and Authority of the General Assembly, held within the framework of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the Work of the General Assembly.

The diplomat of the island said that the role and authority of the General Assembly are clearly established in the Charter of the UN, being its full respect unavoidable. She added that membership of this Organization should be understood as a responsibility that entails the implementation of the provisions and rules established by the General Assembly, including its Regulations.

On the interaction between the Security Council and the General Assembly, she called for the cessation of the growing and dangerous tendency of the Council to invade the scope of action of the Assembly, which entails a violation of the procedures; She also regretted that the Council continues to submit annual reports to the General Assembly which are a mere descriptive review, instead of including an explanatory, exhaustive and analytical content on its work, for the evaluation of the causes and implications of its  decisions..

Rodríguez Camejo called for transparency in the interaction among the main organs of the UN and stressed the importance that the General Assembly continues to examine, through thematic debates, the issues of sustainable development.
