Press Release/71 UNGA: Cuba ensures that reaching the peace, security, wellbeing and development deserved by all the peoples, including those in the Middle East, depends on the decisive action of the Security Council.

New York, 19 October 2016. At the UN Security Council, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal recalled today that the situation in the Middle East region, especially the Palestinian question, continues to be an issue of serious concern for the international community, and expressed that despite the current situation and the overwhelming support to the Palestinian cause, the Security Council has not been able to adopt any resolution whatsoever demanding Israel to put an end to its aggressive policies and colonizing practices.

Building up her statement were inquiries like, How long will this Security Council remain in silence, hostage to the veto or its threat by the United States? How long will this Council keep Israel’s impunity over its criminal actions against the Palestinian people?

In like manner, the Ambassador reaffirmed Cuba’s full support to Palestine’s full-right UN membership and welcomed the will of the Palestinian State to lead the works of the Group of 77, in a near future, highlighting that such leadership will honor the Group.

While reiterating that Cuba condemns the crisis in Syria, as well as, all acts of violence against the civilian population, she demanded a halt to the violations of the Syrian sovereignty and to foreign military presence.

At the end, the Cuban diplomat reiterated Cuba’s support to a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the conflicts in the Middle East, safeguarding sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of all the States in the region. (Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations)
